Have you ever heard of 'forest corridors'?

Till recently, neither had I.

A couple of months ago, I was in the Bandipura forests of Karnataka on some voluntary work. As I was discussing the problems faced by these forests with Mr.Kantharaj, the officer in charge, the word ‘corridor’ started dominating our discussion. Hence, I was compelled to learn more about the importance and the problems surrounding the word 'corridor'.
Today, the protected forests of our country have become isolated into small pockets or ‘islands’. This has happened for several reasons, but mainly due to the exploding human population. Man’s pressure on the forest land has been specially intense in the last half century, and detrimental to the ecosystem.

The way I understand the ecosystem… from a sand particle to the gigantic hill, all have a role in shaping life on earth, including you and me. From a single celled parasite to an elephant… every one is connected, and the existence of one depends on the other. For an ecosystem to be intact, a healthy biodiversity is essential. For a species to survive in the long run, genetic diversity within the species is vital. But to maintain genetic diversity, it is important to have a viable population of the species. This demands a good large patch of forest. Let us take the elephant, for example. A single elephant clan can cover around 600 sq kms every year. This is their home range. There is clear social hierarchy between the clans, and they avoid one another. This means we need several thousand sq kms of forest for a viable population of elephant to exist.

(If we try to conserve them in small isolated areas, that will cause very serious human-elephant conflict. Also, the genetic diversity of the population will be lost, which is critical for their long term conservation. Eventually they will go extinct from that area due to genetic drift and inbreeding depression. This is just an example of one species among a million of them, which are just as important.) In the present Indian scenario, it is nearly impossible to increase the size of our forests. And the size of our protected forests are not large enough. The only alternative is to somehow connect the forest patches in selected areas. In some places there are existing narrow connections which are called corridors. These corridors have become extremely degraded and disturbed.

As I begin to understand the natural world around me, I am very tempted to do something to reduce a little bit of pressure on these corridors. I have plans to marginally expand their width by purchasing the private land next to the corridors and handing it over to the forest department, thereby giving these ‘life lines’ called forest corridors a chance to rejuvenate. Just like the other life on this planet, you and I are shaped by the elements on earth, so I feel it is time for us to “give it back… to life”. This is my humble wish and I have already taken a few steps. Let me know if you want to walk with me.

This is another
meaningful journey
I have embarked on.

It’s your support and love which has made me what I am today. It’s time for me to GIVE BACK TO LIFE...
my travel and perception has made me understand the need to work for conservation of nature, art and
enable people who are less fortunate.

For extending forest corridors...adopting villages...
to community farming we have vast range of issues to address.

I have pledged a part of my earning in to this cause.
I have done this with joy. And I believe in this sharing because I'm indebted to what life has given me.

I seek your support and strength in this responsible journey.
Will keep updated on the works we take on and seek your help time to time.
Come join us,
Let’s give back to life

OUR PERSPECTIVE

JOURNEY

Life sometimes can take turns, slight, U or may-be 360 degrees. I don’t know which turn is that but definitely, there is something that ignites within to GIVE BACK to LIFE.

All this is not momentous, rather a journey, comprised of experience from knowing downtrodden to riches, destitute to destined, closures to new openings.

I still believe journey has just begun, so on this journey, befriending LIFE is a necessity to co-exist. Much has been taken; it’s time to give back, GIVE BACK to LIFE.
